Kandinsky Tree

So you can clearly see in Bio -> that I am not only and artist, but also a teacher (lover of all things and people, too). I teach young students with special needs. I could rave on and on about the place and situation I am in, but that sounds like a story for another time.
Today, I want to tell you about the Kandinsky trees.
Last year in combination with the PGA Wives we painted a large mural of this Kandinsky tree. While I don't believe Wassily ever painted trees he is famous for some wonky, concentric circles full of color.

Prior to the event some students painted a bare tree. The day of the event some students worked on painted ceiling tiles, some potted plants, and some got to hang out with me (and three lovely PGA Wives) and add circles to the tree. Picking their own colors, standing on an elevated surface, and swirling a messy paint brush - amazing day -  am I right?

So we forever have this bright, cheery tree on our campus, but I liked the idea of each kid taking one home for fall. Something they could relate to and recognize they have at home and school - way cool.
This project took a different spin when I figured everyone's motivation to get their hands on a pair of scissors.

Of course teaching life got in the way of thoughtfully documenting this post. 24 excited little hands looking to create? Who could blame me for wanting to join in and forgetting my camera.

But the final result I found worth laminating; hoping parents will think they are as great as I do.

There are a lot of people who do this a lot better than me. A lot.

I tend to get a lot of phrases and song lyrics stuck in my head. The same way I get objects, forms, themes stuck in my head when I am painting. I needed a new creative outlet, so I bought two brush pens. Hand lettering is obviously everywhere right now, and the flow of the ink and the free form of the motion has proven very therapeutic for me.

Definitely going to continue practicing; seems like a great porch activity in the coming weeks. What is your creative release? Is it different than your typical art? Have you tried brush lettering? Got any tips for me? Pens you like?  Let's chat in the comments.

Saturday was one of those days. I didn't know exactly what I was signed up for, but about 15 minutes into it I knew it was going to be life altering.

I took a picture at the beginning when a few creative, stylish, rocking, ladies showed off their shoes- inspired by some incredible speakers with gold glitter showstoppers. And then a picture at the end when Cyndie Spiegel empowered the room with a closing talk on collaboration. "What are you waiting for?!"

PSA - I went and asked an art lady I admire if she wanted to collaborate that NIGHT! Yes, that's how inspiring Saturday was.
In-between the morning antics and afternoon empowerment i was feverishly taking notes, making three new friends, and taking in the determination and passion of everyone around me. I mean check out that group; I certainly am in awe.
